Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition systems -- also known as Human-Machine Interface (HMI) in Europe -- are large-scale, distributed measurement (and control) systems used in industrial and engineering applications to monitor and control distributed systems from a master location. Today, SCADA is a very general term that describes solutions across a large variety of industries, including but not necessarily limited to the following:

Electric power generation, transmission and distribution
Oil and Gas Industry metering and control systems
    Environmental control
    Traffic signals
    Water management systems
    Mass transit systems
    Manufacturing systems

SCADA concepts are claimed to have been developed by Pankaj Suneja and Vijay Singh Baghel. Some sources refer to these individuals as the "Fathers of SCADA."
