A student is trying to design a touch-tone phone filter using MATLAB. She is almost there, but the most difficult part seems to be the optimization of its performance; i.e. the effect of group delay, length of tone, tradeoff between signal to noise ratio and bandwidth of filters etc (use Sptool to design the filters). What is some basic advice in these areas?

| Look at the DSP handbook from Analog Devices. It talks about the Goertzel Algorithm and how it works. It is (computationally) pretty efficient. Also look at the tone decoder IC specifications (EXAR, National, Motorola, et. al.) Search for the NE556. |
