Variable reluctance sensors comprise a coil of wire wound around a magnetic core. As a ferrous metal passes near one pole it disturbs the magnetic field and induces a small voltage in the coil. In this example, the voltage is amplified, shaped, and converted to a digital signal for indicating vehicle wheel speed.
