Level sensors are used to determine the amount of product
in holding tanks and process tanks. In modern industry the raw materials
used to produce all types of products and the finished product may be
stored in a tank or bin. A means of measuring the level of the tank or
bin is essential to determine the amount of product that is in them.
This can be accomplished by a variety of sensors. This section will explain
the operation of the sensors used to determine the level of products.
Some sensors will use the pressure or weight of a product to determine
its level.
Level sensors may be categorized in several ways. One way is
to determine if the level is to be measured at a given setpoint, or
if it's to be measured continuously from minimum to maximum. The sensor
that determines the level at a single point is called a point-contact
sensor, and the sensor that measures the level from minimum to maximum
is called a continuous level sensor.
